Vermeil is a combination of sterling silver, gold, and other precious metals, commonly used as a component in jewelry. A typical example is sterling silver coated with 14 carat (58%) gold. To be considered vermeil, the gold must be at least 10 carat (42%) and be at least 2.5 micrometres thick. Vermeil can be produced by either fire-gilding or electrolysis. Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% by mass of pure silver and 7.5% by mass of other metals, usually copper. Sterling silver is hypo-allergenic though a few people may have reactions depending on their individual body chemistry.
With regular ware, sterling silver does not tarnish, however if not worn for a period of time, the copper or other metals can tarnish or blacken. A polishing cloth is the simplest way to clean and polish your sterling silver. |
